The George Emil Palade University of Medicine, Pharmacy, Science, and Technology of Targu Mures is pleased to announce the launch of a new Master’s degree programme entitled History of Religions – Religion and Politics. This is the first programme in Romania to examine the relationship between religion and politics from a religious studies perspective.
This new two-year program at the Petru Maior Faculty of Sciences and Letters explores religion as a historical and political phenomenon, analysing traditions, myths, and institutions, with emphasis on historical and political foundations.
All classes will be conducted in English by distinguished experts in religious studies, history, anthropology, and theology from universities in Western Europe and the United States. Erasmus programs will allow future Master’s students to participate in placements at partner universities.
The curriculum covers topics such as religious fundamentalism, the relationship between the state and the Church in Central and Eastern Europe, religion in international relations, migration, and the interpretation of sacred objects and texts. Teaching will highlight the historical continuities that connect political modernity to religious imagery, with special emphasis on Romania and how secularisation and recent radicalisation affect public discourse.
Online registration will be held from September 9 to 12, 2025, on the admitere.umfst.ro platform. More information is available here.
