The 21st century is a century of population metabolic diseases, which are based on major nutritional imbalances; this is the case of diabetes, obesity, dyslipidemias, cardiovascular diseases, whose incidence, already high, is continuing to increase. The range of therapeutic measures applicable to these conditions is fundamentally based on prompt, integrated, and continuous nutritional intervention. Their prevention likewise requires the implementation, at the population level, of a new lifestyle that includes principles of healthy nutrition. The educational process offered by this study program ensures the formation of new knowledge, skills and abilities, which will serve both for professional training and as a communication and inter-relationship link with other specialists in the health field. The nutritionist plays an important role in maintaining health, physical performance, in the prevention and treatment of various diseases, in community education, in the development of public health policies, food service management, food quality expertise and consumer information.
The mission of the Bachelor’s program in Nutrition and Dietetics, aligned with the mission of the Faculty of Pharmacy as part of the “G.E. Palade” University of Medicine, Pharmacy, Science and Technology of Târgu Mureș, is to promote education and academic excellence in training competitive graduates who can integrate into the labor market within European healthcare systems. The aim is to train specialists in the field of nutrition and dietetics, food behavior and food safety, with an extension to the field of prophylaxis, nutritional medical therapy and recovery, in ensuring food quality and promoting health among the community. At the same time, graduates of this study program will acquire professional skills related to counseling people regarding a healthy lifestyle, healthy physical activity and avoiding risky behaviors.
The study program is part of the university’s strategy of adapting to current demands and is based on increasing the level of education and professional training of human capital, developing human resources within a high-performance academic system, facilitating young people’s insertion into the labor market, and improving access to education. The program is successfully complemented by Master’s and Doctoral study programs, efficiently integrating it into the Bologna system of higher education.
The general objectives of the Bachelor's degree program in Nutrition and Dietetics aim to prepare graduates in the health field, capable of integrating as professionals in the labor market and adequately responding to the specific requirements regarding the activities in the field in which they will work.
Specific objectives of the Bachelor’s degree program in Nutrition and Dietetics are:
- The ability to ensure the nutritional care process by performing nutritional assessment, establishing nutritional diagnosis, designing and implementing dietary plans, and monitoring nutritional status in acute or chronic conditions.
- Adequate knowledge of the chemical composition of foods, dietary supplements, and other health-related products, as well as the appreciation of their role in maintaining health and treating certain diseases.
- Adequate knowledge of food processing technologies, modern gastronomy methods, and the physico-chemical, biological, and microbiological processes that influence the quality of these processes.
- The ability to critically evaluate scientific data and research in the field of nutrition and dietetics.
- Knowledge of legal and ethical regulations in this field.
- Consultancy and expertise in the field of nutrition, dietary supplements, and health products, with an important role in maintaining health status, physical performance, and in the prevention and treatment of various conditions.
- Management, marketing, and administration in the field of nutrition and public health.
- Analysis and quality control of food products, dietary supplements, and other health-related products.
- Community education, development of public health policies, and consumer information.

Obtaining the qualification of Licensed Nutritionist-Dietitian opens multiple career paths as an authorized dietitian, with graduates being able to choose successful careers in the following professional fields:
- Clinical Dietitian: works at the level of primary, secondary, and tertiary healthcare, in nutrition centers and practices, hospitals and clinics, spa resorts, recovery centers, etc.
- Administrative Dietitian: works in the management of food services and products, catering units, the food industry, food analysis and control laboratories, interdisciplinary entrepreneurship, professional NGOs, etc.
- Public or Community Health Dietitian: has a direct role in health promotion and in formulating policies for healthier food choices at the individual or group level, in public health institutions, NGOs, educational institutions, wellness and fitness centers, national health authorities (Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry), etc.
- continuing studies through Master’s or Doctoral programs in various fields, with involvement in teaching and research activities in higher education and research institutions.
- Practicing the profession in a country in the European Community, as the diplomas awarded by UMPhST G.E.Palade are recognized in the EU
