HISTORY

Medical education in Târgu Mureș began in 1945, within the Bolyai University of Cluj-Napoca. In 1945, the Faculty of Medicine was moved to Târgu Mureș, where it operated for three years. In 1948, the Medical-Pharmaceutic Institute was established, which obtained, in 1965, the right to grant the scientific title of Doctor of Medicine. In 1991, the institute was named the University of Medicine and Pharmacy.
The Faculty of Medicine represents the main component of the “George Emil Palade” University of Medicine, Pharmacy, Sciences and Technology of Târgu Mureș, both in terms of the number of students and teaching staff, as well as in terms of medical, research and academic development professional achievements. This institution was established almost eight decades ago and has become the symbol of academic life in our town.
The Faculty of Medicine of Târgu Mureș is the only one in Romania with teaching in Hungarian, which attests to its multicultural character. More than 3,500 students are enrolled in the university’s bachelor’s degree programs in addition to others participating in master’s degree or doctoral programs. Numerous resident doctors from all medical specialties are also under the guidance of teaching staff working in the university clinics of Târgu Mureș.
Graduates of the Faculty of Medicine can continue their studies through master’s degree programs, doctoral programs or continuous medical education programs, in the form of postgraduate courses, symposia, conferences, conventions or summer schools.
The Faculty of Medicine has a curriculum adapted to the current standards of medical education, a student-centered teaching system and a unified way of evaluating students within the same study program.
The teaching and research infrastructure, the outstanding sports facility and the national and international mobility programs are solid reasons why young people choose to study at the Faculty of Medicine in Târgu Mureș.
