The “Petru Maior” Faculty of Sciences and Letters

HISTORY, PRESENT, PERSPECTIVES

Since the 2019-2020 academic year, the Faculty of Science and Letters bears the name of Petru Maior, a historian, philologist, writer and Transylvanian Greek-Catholic archpriest. His cultural and political action, carried out within the Transylvanian School, had a decisive impact on the evolution of Romanian society and identity in modern times. The faculty thus retains the patronage of the humanist scholar, whose name belonged to the former “Petru Maior” University of Târgu Mureș for more than a quarter of a century, which, through the unification with the University of Medicine and Pharmacy from Târgu Mureș, became part of the new “George Emil Palade” University of Medicine, Pharmacy, Science and Technology, one of the largest institutional projects in the higher learning developed in Romania in the last three decades.

But the history of the “Petru Maior” Faculty of Sciences and Letters begins in 1960, with the establishment of the 3-year Pedagogical Institute in Târgu Mureș. Initially comprising two sections, the institution focused on preparing educators in diverse specializations over the years, including Romanian history, Romanian-Hungarian studies, History-Geography, Mathematics-Physics, Chemistry, Physics, Music, Mathematics, and Physical Education, as well as schoolmasters. In the following years, even though the humanist profile morphed into a technical profile, the collective of humanist teachers continued their work in the educational and scientific fields. In line with this tradition, the Faculty of Sciences and Letters commenced its operations in 1993 as an integral part of the “Petru Maior” University of Târgu Mureș, alongside the Engineering Faculty and the University College.

Maintaining its multidisciplinary tradition, the “Petru Maior” Faculty of Sciences and Letters continues to offer a comprehensive array of academic programs across various disciplines, such as, Philology, Communication Sciences, History, Political Science, Physical and Sports Education, and Education Sciences. Specialized study paths are also available, enabling in-depth exploration of areas such as Philology, History, and Physical Education and Sports.

The curriculum, comprising courses, seminars, and practical sessions offered by the “Petru Maior” Faculty of Sciences and Letters give research perspectives connected to the context and economic requirements of the contemporary world. The faculty benefits from top technical facilities, the laboratories are connected to the internet, with wireless service in all buildings, a room for consecutive-simultaneous interpreting with state-of-the-art equipment, as well as a Faculty Library with a rich collection of volumes and serial publications as well as access to prestigious international databases. The primary focus of student training revolves around fostering creativity in thought and action, cultivating the capacity for innovation, invention, and the optimal utilization of intellectual resources.
