Strategic Partnership for Developing the First Smart Hospital in Romania

George Emil Palade University of Medicine, Pharmacy, Science and Technology of Targu Mures announces the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with Microsoft Romania to co-develop the country’s first Smart Hospital, a significant step towards the future of medicine in Romania. This landmark project aims to revolutionise healthcare through innovative structures, advanced facilities, and smart technologies. Strengthening the collaboration between academia and the IT industry will lead to the establishment of Romania’s first Smart Hospital. This strategic project, supported by the Romanian government and implemented by G.E. Palade UMPhST of Targu Mures, will serve as a pilot unit for the complete digitalisation of the Romanian healthcare system.

The Memorandum of Understanding was signed by Professor Leonard Azamfirei, MD, PhD, Rector of G.E. Palade UMPhST of Targu Mures, and Bogdan Putinică, General Manager for Microsoft Central Europe EURA (Baltic States, CIS, Moldova, Romania, Ukraine). The partnership will harness the Azure cloud computing platform and Microsoft’s artificial intelligence services and solutions to improve the delivery of healthcare, research, and education services at the George Emil Palade Hospital. Combining cutting-edge technology, patient-centered design, and a commitment to research and education, the project represents a paradigm shift in healthcare service delivery.

„This collaboration with Microsoft will enable us to bring innovative solutions to the healthcare industry, improving patient care and advancing medical research and education,” said Professor Leonard Azamfirei. Bogdan Putinică added, „We are very enthusiastic about working with UMPhST on this groundbreaking project. By combining our technological expertise with UMPhST’s commitment to medical excellence, we aim to set a new healthcare standard in Romania and far beyond.”

Among the strategic objectives of the partnership are the transfer of expertise, the integration of cutting-edge technologies in healthcare (AI-based tools and integrated cloud services), and the sharing of best practices. The MOU outlines the framework for strategic technical and market collaboration in healthcare, research, and education, including joint marketing activities, sales agreements, and solution delivery. The parties will explore opportunities for technical cooperation in areas such as data analytics, machine learning, artificial intelligence, security, and privacy solutions.

Setting a new benchmark for medical excellence in Romania, the George Emil Palade Hospital is destined to become a leader in innovation, a provider of patient-centered care, a research centre, and an educational hub.
