Project summary (objectives, target groups, key results, as planned at the application stage)
Objectives:

The aim of the EMPOWERED project is to modernise medical education by integrating artificial intelligence (AI)- and virtual reality (VR)-supported training in order to improve doctor–patient communication skills and enhance treatment outcomes.

Specific objectives:

  • Develop a scalable, competency-based training model for medical communication.
  • Integrate VR and AI tools to strengthen practical, patient-centred education.
  • Improve treatment outcomes through advanced communication strategies.
  • Embed digital communication training in medical education policy.

Implementation:
Planned activities:
The EMPOWERED project will develop a structured curriculum, create an AI-supported learning platform and implement VR simulations involving real and simulated patients. An accessibility module will be designed for students with visual impairments, teaching materials will be developed (12 modules + 9 topics), educators will be trained, and all materials will be translated into several languages (Polish, Hungarian and Romanian). Testing, feedback collection, quality assurance, dissemination activities and recommendations will ensure the project’s sustainability and impact.

Results and outputs:
The EMPOWERED project will develop 12 curriculum modules, 7 webXR-based VR role-play simulations and 19 educator guides; launch an open-access platform; and create an AI-based updating system drawing on more than 30 verified sources for medical students, postgraduate students and educators. Inclusiveness will be ensured through a module for students with visual impairments, and all developed materials will be translated into Hungarian, Romanian and Polish. Recommendations for standardising medical education across the EU will also be prepared.
