UMPhST plays an active role in Romania’s integration into the European bioinformatics infrastructure ELIXIR

The G.E. Palade University of Medicine, Pharmacy, Science and Technology of Targu Mures welcomes the adoption by the Romanian Government of the draft law approving the ELIXIR consortium agreement, the European infrastructure for bioinformatics.

As an active member of the Romanian Bioinformatics Cluster (CRB), UMPhST Targu Mures is contributing to this strategic effort through the Advanced Center for Medical and Pharmaceutical Research (CCAMF), which has developed the administrative framework necessary for establishing the CRB — an inter-institutional entity created to operationalise the national node of ELIXIR.

This decision marks a major step in strengthening Romania’s national bioinformatics capacity and integrating Romanian research into the European scientific ecosystem, by facilitating researchers in Romania’s access to advanced digital infrastructures, modern computational tools, molecular data resources and high-level training programmes.

The project is the result of a joint effort by the universities and research institutes that are partners within the CRB, of a shared vision, and of close collaboration aimed at developing bioinformatics in Romania.

“G.E. Palade UMPhST Targu Mures will continue to actively support the development of this emerging field and sustain the initiative launched by the National Authority for Research to take this important step for increasing the visibility and international competitiveness of Romanian research. Interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation, fundamental principles for our university, find their applicability in biomedical research as well, in close connection with European research standards and values”, said Prof. Dr. Leonard Azamfirei, Rector of UMPhST.

“Romanian Bioinformatics Cluster offers today a coherent platform of inter‐institutional cooperation, connection to European initiatives and valorisation of human resources in Romanian research. We have been directly involved in this project, understanding that the development of bioinformatics in Romania is a strategic priority and can be achieved sustainably only through investment in collaboration, access to modern infrastructures and continuous support for life-sciences researchers”, said Prof. Dr. Claudia Bănescu, Vice-Rector for Research, Development and Technology Transfer and Director of CCAMF.
