Romanian Language Preparatory Year for Foreign Citizens is addressed to all foreign citizens, whether from the EU or outside of it, who wish to enroll in undergraduate or graduate study programmes at higher education institutions in Romania.

The program offers a comprehensive training plan for acquiring skills in Romanian language, culture, and civilization. The fundamental courses emphasize the identity of the Romanian language. The practical courses are structured in accordance with the language proficiency levels outlined in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. The optional course in specialized languages complements communication skills in Romanian.

The teaching activities focus on employing a variety of modern, student-centred methodological and pedagogical approaches, aiming to ensure rapid progress in language learning.

Romanian Language Preparatory Year for Foreign Citizens has been designed with the consideration of the need to integrate international students into Romanian society by learning the language and understanding the cultural identity aspects of Romania, which will provide them with a solid foundation for their chosen field of study.

Detalii suplimentare

The mission of the Romanian language preparatory year program for foreigners (acronym: PPLR), with a duration of two semesters (60 ECTS), consists of linguistic preparation of international students, foreign citizens from third-party EU states, admitted to study for university or postgraduate programs conducted in Romanian language, in order to acquire general and professional communication competencies. These activities are organized and operated in accredited higher education institutions, following evaluation by the Romanian Agency for Quality Assurance in Higher Education based on its own framework methodology (cf. Code: UMFST-REG-101 Edition 02). The PPLR program operates legally in accordance with Order no. 5516 of July 26, 2024, regarding the organization and conduct of the preparatory year of Romanian language for foreign citizens.

General Objective: The assimilation of communication competencies in Romanian at a minimum level of B1 (independent user), in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages by non-EU foreign citizens who wish to enroll in study programs in Romanian language at university or post-university level in Romania.

Specific Objectives and Linguistic Competencies descriptors(according to CEFR):

  1. Formation and development of the four components of linguistic communication competence in Romanian (linguistic competence and pragmatic competence, sociolinguistic competence, intercultural competence) within the limits of the B1 reference level of the CEFR.
  2. Carrying out various communicative activities of reception, production, interaction in oral and/or written form necessary for the formation of linguistic communication competence in Romanian within the limits of the B1 reference level of the CEFR.
  3. Focusing the teaching-learning process on the communication needs in Romanian language of an independent user (according to CEFR) in various areas of social life: personal domain, public domain, educational domain, and professional domain.
  4. Acquiring professional linguistic communication competence in Romanian at an intermediate level (B1, according to CEFR) by familiarizing students with the specific language features and through the integrated use of content specific to each professional field considered.

Linguistic Competence descriptors (according to the B1 level requirements of the CEFR) in Romanian

To acquire the general competence in communication in Romanian, according to the B1 level descriptors, it is necessary to use appropriately the specific linguistic contents of the grammatical structure of the contemporary Romanian language (vocabulary, grammar, semantics, phonology, and spelling), knowledge assimilated independently and integrated.

 

General Communication Competencies in Romanian (linguistic and pragmatic competencies)

Listening skills (listening and understanding of oral messages)

  • B1 Understanding the main points of a discourse on familiar topics related to professional activities, school, leisure activities, etc.
  • B1 Understanding practical information regarding daily life or work, recognizing general messages and some details if presented relatively clearly and at a slow pace.
  • B1 Understanding an oral discourse in standard Romanian, in direct communication or in radio broadcasts, recordings about familiar or unfamiliar subjects, from personal, social, academic, or professional life.

Reading skills (reading and understanding of written messages)

  • B1 Reading with satisfactory understanding of texts written generally in everyday language, pertaining to one’s own professional field and personal interests (description of events, expression of feelings, etc.).

 Audiovisual reception

  • B1 Understanding numerous films where the storyline relies heavily on action and visuals, and where expression is clear and direct.
  • B1 Understanding essential information from some radio and television programs on familiar topics, if the words are well articulated and pronunciation is clear.

Speaking skills (production of oral messages): oral discourse

  • B1 Making a simple and coherent description regarding various topics from one’s own field of interest (experiences, events, objectives, etc.) in a linear sequence.
  • B1 Providing a brief presentation of an event, the subject of a book, or a film.
  • B1 Briefly arguing opinions from one’s own field of interest.

Speaking skills (exchange of oral messages): oral interaction

  • B1 Fully participating in a simple conversation on a familiar or personally interesting topic.
  • B1 Expressing personal opinions on an abstract or cultural topic (a film, a book, a piece of music, etc.).
  • B1 Understanding a clear discourse addressed to them, with the ability to restate some parts of it for clarification and to provide feedback in communication.

Writing skills (production of written messages): written discourse

  • B1 Drafting personal notes and letters to request or convey essential information, clearly emphasizing aspects deemed important.
  • B1 Writing to request additional information on abstract or concrete topics.

 

General Competencies in Professional Linguistic Communication (sociolinguistic competencies)

Mastery of specialized language elements, including:

  • Developing the ability to transfer linguistic forms from common language to specialized languages and vice versa.
  • Pertinent and correct usage of basic lexical elements within a terminological set in communication acts.
  • Integrated utilization of linguistic contents (phonetics, vocabulary, grammar) in written and oral communication contexts adapted to a specific professional domain.
  • Deepening reception skills (understanding written text, understanding by listening) and production skills (writing, oral expression) of specialized texts, within the limits of level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
  • Correct adaptation to various specific professional communication situations within the studied field.

 

Specific Competencies in Professional Linguistic Communication at B1 Level (minimum)

  • The field of Biological and Biomedical Sciences:
    • Efficient and appropriate execution of specific oral communication acts in the doctor-patient relationship through acquired vocabulary and communication techniques: history taking, consultation, communication of diagnosis, and therapeutic methods
    • Accurate reception of medical texts (medical textbooks, medical compendiums, medical dictionaries, anatomy atlases, etc.).
    • Correct drafting of specific medical documents: prescription, medical letter, patient’s chart, etc.
  • The Field of Engineering Sciences:
    • Efficient communication on topics and in situations specific to engineering science, utilizing elements of vocabulary characteristic for the technical domain.
    • Drafting descriptive and argumentative texts using linguistic content specific to engineering.
    • Proper reception of specialized texts in the field of engineering (projects, studies, treaties, etc.).
  • The Field of Mathematics and Natural Science:
    • Pertinent usage of linguistic content to present or explain scientific theories, axioms, theorems, formulas, and definitions specific to mathematics and natural sciences.
    • Proper reception of scientific texts (treatises, studies, specialized articles, etc.), requirements of problems, and exercises specific to mathematics and natural sciences.
    • Correct and coherent drafting of texts with content specific to mathematics and natural sciences (reports, reviews, exercises, problems, experiments, demonstrations, etc.
  • The field of Social Science:
    • Acquiring efficient communication skills specific to relationships in the field of social sciences (psychologist – patient, social worker – clients, educator – student, lawyer – client, bank agent – client, etc.), utilizing the acquired specific vocabulary.
    • Correct and coherent execution of specific oral discourses in the field of social sciences: pleading and indictment, lecture, etc., through appropriate utilization of acquired linguistic contents (phonetics, grammar, and vocabulary).
    • Adaptation to various situations imposed by communication in the economic and business system, correctly utilizing the acquired communication techniques.
  • The field of Social Science and Arts:
    • Execution of communication acts characteristic of humanities and arts (articulate argumentation of opinions within debates, scientific events, cultural events, book launches, art exhibitions), employing appropriate use of specialized language.
    • Proper reception of specific texts in humanities and arts (literary works, scientific studies, cultural press, film scripts, etc.).
    • Coherent drafting of argumentative, descriptive, and narrative texts, utilizing themes specific to humanities and arts.
  • The Field of Sports Science and Physical Education:
    • Assimilation and correct and fluent usage, in both written and oral communication, of vocabulary specific to Physical Education and Sports.
    • Proper understanding of specialized texts from textbooks, professional books, dictionaries, etc.
    • Correct and coherent drafting of texts with content specific to the field.

 

 

Intercultural Competencies:

  • Acquiring specific socio-cultural knowledge for integration into the Romanian socio-cultural environment.
  • Developing intercultural awareness for understanding, awareness, and comprehension of intercultural relations.
  • Acquiring and developing intercultural skills and abilities for recognizing and utilizing strategies for interacting with native Romanian speakers.
  • Acquiring the ability for intercultural mediation to efficiently manage conflicts and cultural misunderstandings.
  • Developing an intercultural personality by stimulating interest, respect, and tolerance towards Romanian socio-cultural values and realities.
  • Acquiring and appropriately utilizing sociolinguistic knowledge and skills to support intercultural communication.
  • Understanding Romanian social and cultural particularities, as well as their integrating elements within European culture.

  • Teamwork, interpersonal communication, and assuming specific roles.
  • Organizing an individual project for continuous education.
  • Proper interaction of foreign students with their Romanian counterparts and demonstrating a tolerant attitude.
